Syrah (or Shiraz as it is also known) is traditionally a Mediterranean or warm climate varietal. Over the past 10 years, Syrah has become one of the world's most popular reds and many areas of the world have started to grow this hardy variety. Marynissen has produced Syrah since 1998.
The 2006 Vintage was for the most part shaping up to be an excellent vintage, long hot days, with just enough rainfall leading into harvest, and then...well it rained. The strategy we, like everyone else, had was to hope for some dry days, so that we could harvest before the grapes burst from too much water. Thankfully that day came, on October 3 the grapes were harvested at 22 Brix.
The 2006 Syrah is showing wonderful red berry, leather and tobacco aromas. The tannins are firm yet well integrated with the fruit, and has a slight peppery finish. We believe this wine has the potential to remain fresh and drink nicely past 2012
